CASE STUDY | CONSTRUCTION & INFRASTRUCTURE

Security operations supporting a major development in Digbeth

A large commercial and residential redevelopment in Digbeth required security to operate around an active construction site with multiple access points, valuable plant, materials and changing areas of activity. Innovative Security Solutions delivered a layered security operation combining Security Guarding, Mobile Patrols, access control and Rapid Deployment CCTV across the 14-month construction phase. The operation maintained site security throughout the project, with zero incidents of material theft or property damage recorded and no security-related downtime affecting project continuity.

THE REQUIREMENT

Security that could work around a changing construction environment

The development covered a large site footprint with several access points and continuous construction activity.

Plant, fuel, copper wiring, raw building materials and specialist equipment were present across the site, creating security exposure beyond a single gate or fixed guarding position.

Contractors, visitors and deliveries also needed controlled access while construction activity continued around them.

Out-of-hours periods, overnight shifts and weekend shutdowns increased exposure to unauthorised access, theft and vandalism. Trespass also created an additional safety risk within the active construction environment.

The security operation therefore needed to protect the site without disrupting contractors, deliveries or the wider construction programme.

THE SECURITY APPROACH

Layered security built around the site operation

Innovative Security Solutions combined on-site guarding, access management, mobile patrols and rapid-deployment CCTV coverage across the development.

Each part of the operation addressed a different area of exposure while working as part of the same security plan.

Security Guarding

SIA-licensed security officers maintained an on-site presence and supported day-to-day control around site access and delivery activity.

Access & visitor control

Officers supported contractor log-in, visitor check-in and the site's turnstile controls, helping maintain oversight of people entering and leaving the development.

Mobile Patrols

Mobile patrol activity extended physical checks across the site during overnight periods and weekend shutdowns.

Rapid Deployment CCTV

Rapid-deployment CCTV towers extended security coverage around agreed areas of the changing development and supported perimeter alerting where additional coverage was required.

DELIVERY IN PRACTICE

Security adapting as the development progressed

The security operation worked around the changing requirements of an active construction project.

During normal site activity, officers maintained a visible presence, supported access arrangements and monitored contractor, visitor and delivery movements.

Outside core operating periods, mobile patrols extended physical checks across the wider development, including areas that were not continuously occupied.

Rapid-deployment CCTV towers provided additional coverage around agreed areas as the site layout and exposure changed through different phases of construction.

Where perimeter alerts required a response, the operation maintained response times of under 15 minutes.

The combination of fixed presence, patrol activity, access control and deployable technology allowed the security arrangement to adapt as the construction environment changed rather than remaining fixed throughout the project.

OUTCOME & CLIENT VALUE

Protecting the project across a 14-month construction phase

Across the 14-month deployment:

zero incidents of material theft or property damage were recorded

no security-related downtime affected project continuity

response times under 15 minutes were maintained for perimeter alerts

the security operation was delivered in line with project health and safety requirements, BS 7499 and SafeContractor standards

Client value

  • The deployment gave the project:
  • continuous on-site security support
  • controlled contractor, visitor and delivery access
  • additional out-of-hours coverage through Mobile Patrols
  • adaptable site coverage through Rapid Deployment CCTV
  • a defined response capability for perimeter alerts
  • protection of valuable plant, materials and property throughout the construction phase
  • continuity of the wider project without security-related disruption
  • The result was a security operation able to change with the development while maintaining control across access, perimeter activity and out-of-hours exposure.
